Current positions/activities
- 1989-present Professor of international relations and Middle Eastern studies at the Center for Global Affairs, New York University.

Since 1995 Ben-Meir actively participated in the Israeli-Syrian negotiations and over the past few years he has provided several position papers to advance the Arab Israeli peace process. In each case he engaged top officials of the respective countries. Among some of his recent activity:
- Promoted the involvement of Turkey in the Israeli Palestinian conflict by establishing a comprehensive ceasefire.
- Attempted to bridge the gap between the Palestinian Authority under the late Yassir Arafat and the Sharon government.
- Provided the rationale for the resumption of the negotiations between Israel and Syria.
- Provided the argument to persuade the Arab League to pressure the Palestinians to accept the Saudi Initiative in their meeting in 2006 Khartoum, Sudan.
- Renewed his efforts in this regard by providing a position paper articulating the rationale for incorporating UN resolution 242 to the Arab Initiative to make more acceptable to the Israelis while arguing the importance of getting the Palestinian to accept it.
- Presented a position paper to Israeli officials that argue in favor of accepting the restatement in Riyadh of the Arab Initiative.
