Suspending US-Kosovo Dialogue—A Rude Awakening For Kurti

Although Trump does not necessarily follow logical and practical foreign policy to frame US relations with other countries, his decision to suspend the US-Kosovo dialogue was not entirely misguided. Prime Minister Kurti failed to show statesmanship to steer the country in the right direction. He must now face the inescapable reality that he habitually dismissed….

“Never Again” Has Tragically Lost Its Moral Weight

August 25 marked eight years since Myanmar’s military launched its genocidal campaign against the Rohingya. The UN’s Fact-Finding Mission documented evidence of crimes against humanity and genocide. UN member states should pursue universal jurisdiction cases in their own courts; sanctions must target the junta’s military-owned companies and arms suppliers.

Violence in Syria’s transitional period has left deep scars on communities, with entire neighborhoods targeted for who they are rather than what they did. A new report by Human Rights Watch, Syrians for Truth and Justice, and Syrian Archive uncovers how government forces, allied militias, and armed volunteers carried out mass executions, torture, and the destruction of property. The atrocities primarily targeted Alawis, accused of siding with the former Assad regime. Despite promises of accountability, questions remain about whether those in positions of power, who directed or enabled the operations, will ever be brought to justice. “The government’s acknowledgment of atrocities is a step forward, but it falls short of ensuring justice for higher-level officials,” said Hiba Zayadin, senior Syria researcher at Human Rights Watch. True accountability demands prosecuting those at the top, not just punishing foot soldiers.

Trump, who is consumed with self-grandeur, has been concocting the most egregious plans to create his so-called ‘Riviera of the Middle East,’ involving the ethnic cleansing of Gaza by encouraging the Palestinians to leave for another country by destroying what’s left of the Palestinians’ homes, displacing them, and killing anyone who stands in the way. This is precisely what Netanyahu and his criminal gang are aiming for—to rid Gaza of every Palestinian man, woman and child by using these harshest and cruelest means possible and build a greater Israel on their ashes.

From now on, asylum seekers who found protection in the US could face being sent back home, even if the dangers that forced them to flee have not changed. A new State Department plan, revealed ahead of the UN General Assembly, fails to include the principle of nonrefoulement—the core principle of the global refugee system, which forbids returning people to places where they risk torture or persecution. By portraying asylum as only “temporary” and claiming countries have “absolute” control of their borders, the US is undermining decades of international law. This shift doesn’t just threaten refugees’ safety inside America; it risks opening the door for governments worldwide to strip away basic protections and send people back to danger.

In just nine months, one million Syrians have returned home following the fall of the Assad regime. Yet this is only a fraction of the 4.7 million who remain displaced across Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt after years of brutal conflict. The reality on the ground is bleak: destroyed homes, no electricity, scarce jobs, and continuing insecurity. Most refugees long to return, but say it is impossible under current conditions. More than seven million Syrians remain displaced within the country, while another 4.5 million live abroad. The UN is urging the international community, private sector, and Syrian diaspora to unite in support. Without urgent global action, millions will remain trapped between despair and the dream of return. ... See MoreSee Less

In a shocking decision, the European Court of Human Rights has allowed Austria to deport a man to Syria, despite UNHCR’s clear guidance to stop all forced returns to the still-unstable country. Amnesty International warns of the dangerous precedent this decision sets, especially after another deportee vanished without a trace earlier this year. Austria’s own Foreign Ministry classifies Syria at the highest threat level, with ongoing violence, abductions, and unlawful killings. Forcing people back under these conditions is a blatant violation of the principle of non-refoulement, a cornerstone of international law. This is a betrayal of human rights. Austria must stop forced returns now, before more lives are lost to silence and disappearance. ... See MoreSee Less

At just 22, student activist Zhang Yadi has been arrested in China for one simple act: speaking out. While studying in France, she ran a digital platform promoting Tibetan rights and interethnic dialogue. But when she returned home this summer, authorities detained her in Shangri-La, Yunan province. She is now believed to be held in a detention center in Changsha, Hunan province. Her voice for justice is being treated as a crime. Authorities accuse her of “inciting others to split the country,” a charge that could condemn her to up to 15 years in prison. Zhang’s bravery is a reminder: those who dare to demand equality risk everything. Her fight is not hers alone; it’s a fight for freedom for all. ... See MoreSee Less
