He obtained his PhD in the United States, after which he began teaching in Turkey in his field of study, where he also developed two research and development startups. Joseph was arrested in August 2016 on allegations of being affiliated with, or a member of, the Hizmet movement. He served six years in prison, after which he came to the United States, where he still resides.

As the new Trump White House removes the web page for the Office of Gun Violence Prevention, school shootings continue to occur—this time, at a Nashville, TN high school. Ignoring the problem of gun violence, or trying to pretend that it doesn’t exist, will not end the thousands of children and teens killed by gun violence each year, nor will it prevent 3 million children from being exposed to gun violence each year. We cannot allow our leaders to continue to bury their heads in the sand and pretend that the bloodshed and trauma caused by gun violence each year don’t exist. We must demand that our representatives take action on gun violence and not relent until they have done so. Our children have been asked to endure such transformational trauma related to gun violence and have suffered enough.

The lives of thousands of children could be saved with responsible gun control laws, and the surviving children of gun violence could be spared from the transformational trauma they experienced.

Trump has, in a single day, worked steadfastly to revoke as many LGBTQ+ rights and protections as possible. On his first day in office, Trump issued an executive order mandating that the US government recognize only two sexes, male and female and that they be unchangeable and linked to “biological classification,” affecting federal documentation such as passports and visas. This move accompanies the revocation of numerous executive orders from the Biden administration, which aimed to promote racial equity and protect LGBTQ+ rights. Among the other withdrawn policies are measures designed to combat discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation. This decision is raising major concerns and strong reactions from LGBTQ+ communities and human rights organizations, who view it as a violation of human rights and a step backward in the fight for equality.

Trump’s cancellation of sanctions on far-right Israeli settlers in the West Bank will only fuel further violence against Palestinians, throwing another lit match into the tinderbox of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. By canceling the sanctions imposed on settlers for violently attacking Palestinians, threatening entire families at gunpoint, and blocking Palestinians from accessing their own homes and livestock herds, Trump is sending a clear sign that their egregious actions against Palestinians are not only ok but are sanctioned by this administration. Indeed, only a short time before Trump revoked the sanctions, settler groups stormed into Palestinian villages, burning cars and homes. It is only a matter of time before the next conflagration will ignite past the point of no return. As Israel and the United States are abrogating their duty to calm tensions, it is critical now more than ever before that other powers step up to enforce sanctions on these extremists and pressure the Israeli government to take steps to calm tensions and work toward peace.
