The United States cages about 2 million people—more than any other country on earth and more than many authoritarian states combined. Hundreds of thousands are locked up for nonviolent offenses, including people serving years simply for possessing marijuana, even as cannabis is now legal or decriminalized in much of the country. To deepen the disgrace, many facilities are run by for profit corporations whose business model depends on keeping cells full, not on delivering justice or rehabilitation. This is not a system gone slightly wrong; it is a vast human warehousing industry that preys on the poor, on minorities, and on the powerless. It is a moral travesty and a permanent stain on America’s claim to champion freedom and human rights.
India is moving closer to controlling what people can say online. Under Narendra Modi, new rules would give the government more power over social media, treating ordinary users like news outlets. This could make people afraid to speak freely. Many posts critical of the government are already being removed without clear reasons. What is called a fight against “fake news” is starting to look like a way to silence criticism. When people fear speaking out, democracy turns into a dictatorship.

The Maldives is moving to bring back the death penalty and expand it. President Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to allow executions again, including for drug-related crimes. Human rights groups warn this would break international law and put lives at serious risk. The death penalty has been paused for years, but now the government wants to restart it quickly. This is not justice; it is a dangerous step backward. Punishing people with death, especially for non-violent crimes, crosses a clear line. A country should move toward protecting life rather than taking it.

China is no longer regulating religion; it is crushing it. Under Xi Jinping, the Catholic faith is being forced into submission, stripped of independence, and reshaped to serve the Communist Party. Churches are monitored, priests silenced, believers intimidated. What Beijing calls “Sinicization” is, in reality, ideological domination. Even the Vatican’s 2018 deal now risks legitimizing this crackdown. Underground communities are being erased, slowly, deliberately. This is not policy; it is persecution dressed as governance.

Hours before a ceasefire, the Israeli military destroyed the Qasmieh bridge, the last lifeline connecting southern Lebanon to the rest of the country. Tens of thousands of civilians are now effectively trapped, cut off from food, water, and medical care. This was not collateral damage—it was a calculated act that risks constituting a war crime. This pattern of systematically destroying civilian infrastructure reveals a dangerous disregard for human life. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel’s military leadership must be held accountable. The international community cannot remain silent; pressure must be immediate and unequivocal.
